Lights. Camera. POSTER!

Who has not drooled at the sight of Filipina teenage actress Kathryn Bernardo at the back of her on-screen partner Daniel Padilla at the movieMust Be Love.I did not because I wasn’t a fan but I know millions of teeny boppers did, and I understand the craze.  Whose heart has not raced in excitement at the sight of RPatz, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner with the text Breaking Dawn Part 2?  Mine did not, because I was not following the Twilight series.  But I knowmillion hearts stopped at that sight, considering the massive following of the series.

At the high of technological advancement, where trailers and video spoilers could be readily accessible — thanks to YouTube! — movie posters continue to give movie goers a cringe every time.  And why not? Movie posters are printed reminders of the next attraction.  It gets to have us thinking of when the last time we watched a movie inside the theater, which always occur to me, and entices us to go and watch the latest flick.

But movie posters, after it has served its purpose, do not basically just end up trashed, although this is the usual scenario.  For others, it becomes a memento of a wonderful and vivid memory. For some, it becomes a part of a collection.  Hence, movie posters still sparkle and keep a certain value despite the passage of time.  But despite that, there seems to be a void in the local market.  Posters are not really available in the market.  Blame it on technology, where you can simply download and print.  But then, no one can replace a glossy, good resolution movie poster; however, no one will go the extra mile just to get one for you.

And so movie aficionados must have begged the heavens for movie posters.  And the Gods might have heard their every plea and call.  Finally, no one need to search and look far away or go pester people just to get a hold of your much coveted movie poster. Imagine seeing Logan Lerman’s face being the first one you see in the morning and the last one you see every night.

Thanks to Digital Poster Domain, a made-to-order poster enterprise, any poster cravings will be satiated in no time.

The business is the brainchild of Darren Lacson and Miguel Acosta, two self-confessed movie lovers, who felt to fill that void in the market.

“Many people have to contend with asking movie theatre attendants for used, worn-out posters if they want to have one,” says Darren, who has a background on advertising and a passion for cinematic artwork, citing Drew Struzan —his idol — and how he (Struzan) can put the essence of movie on movie posters.

“What’s worst is that people now even resort to buying poster at ridiculously high prices. Price ranges from P2k to as high as P5K for second hand posters. Plus, one has to contend with having just the mainstream movies of the current releases. Digital Poster Domain answers the need for movie posters from all genre and era available on demand.”

But how did all begin? “It started when a friend wanted to customize his home theatre and couldn’t find the movie posters he wanted. I helped him our by contacting another friend from the states and got access to high-definition poster images.”  And just like everything what is always said to a long anecdote of success, the rest was history.

The business has gone through many ups and downs since “people have not yet embraced the beauty and practicality of digitally remastered movie posters.”  And the beauty of remastered movie posters is uncontestable, since, for Digital Posters Domain, they give it to you just like how you first saw it.  And the best part of their service? They can unearth and remaster movie posters all the way from the 40s, but get it at the same price.

Actual Catching Fire poster reproduced by DPD.

“Imagine giving you parents a poster of their first movie together? That’s something not any other gift can provide,” Darren says. And I can’t agree more!

IT ALL BEGINS WITH A SPARK

“Basically, it is the demand that dictates our business direction. Hunger Games has a huge following and that creates a high demand for Hunger Games posters.”  And the massive fanbase generated a great demand for the DPD, hence, skyrocketing their sales.

The demands did not just make way for unbelievable profits.  It also paved for patrons and movie lovers to get to know more of the business.

Darren cites Katniss as his favorite Hunger Games character for her strength of character.  This strength of character does not only reflect to Katniss but also emanates to those who understand her strength and that is what the enterprise show.  At the same time, the strength of character can also be seen not just in all the hardwork the partners put in into the business, but also in the quality of their posters.

Speaking of Catnip, you can also have this poster and be inspired by
our beloved heroine, Katniss Everdeen
“Our movie poster has passed through our strict quality control. We also ensure that posters get to our clients in mint condition. We wrap and pack our posters very carefully taking into consideration how our client would feel when they see a very nicely packed movie poster of their favorite movie.”

The quality plus the reasonable price and impeccable service thus had earned them positive responses from costumers, just like how Katniss’ character earned her the admiration and support of Panem.

CATCHING THE FIRE

Catching Fire is now being shown in various movie houses here in the Philippines.  And just like any avid Hunger Games fan or any movie lover, Darren and Miguel are sure to be among those who will flock the cinemas.

And although the story and the ending is perfectly fine for them, they can’t help but wonder if Lara Croft, the kick-ass hero of the Tomb Raider series and played by the mother of all the perfectly pouty lips, Angelina Jolie, could stand against the headstrong Katniss Everdeen.

We will never know until someone makes a spin off.  And by that time happens, another movie poster will be added to the long list of movie posters offered by DPD.

Now that is fabulous!

Budget-Friendly Luxury

Mr. Webster defines luxury as “something adding to pleasure or comfort but not absolutely necessary.”  He also points out that luxury may be defined as “a condition of abundance.”  Hence, it makes sense that luxury is a twin of wealth.  Think of Hermés, Bottega Venetta, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Christian Louboutin — they spell luxury with a prize only a few people can make hold it tangibly on their hands.

However, one can exempt this online shop hailing all the way from the Philippines’ queen city of the South — Cebu.  It’s Signature Collections Unlimited, a shop that sells affordable “fandom stuffs about books and movies that fan lovers would love to have”, so Chao R. Says, the owner of the said enterprise.

”I’ve been to business since 2011,” says Chao.  “I started selling books and then upgraded to selling One Direction Items [and] personalized Items. But I had to close it [SCU] this 2013 because my partner and I decided to go on solo businesses.”

SCU made a comeback just this November 1 and is now venturing, as mentioned earlier, on retailing book series merchandises coming from both local and international suppliers.

In a competitive online environment, many small-scale businesses try hard to keep their heads above water and thrive.  But the key ingredient to gain an upperhand is to be different, and for Chao R., it is offering her products in a more budget-friendly price and by throwing giveaways at her own site and sponsoring the same in other sources.

“I want to assure that my customers get the best from my business by simply offering them high-quality products at a very low cost even if it means I don’t gain much profit,” Chao says.

IT ALL BEGINS WITH A SPARK

Asking Chao as to why she sells Hunger Games merchandises, she admits, “I, myself love The Hunger Games trilogy as well. I also want to share my stuffs at a lower cost to my clients who are die-hard fans of the said trilogy.”

And just like any victor, the reward for doing so has been amazing.  Talking about the SCU pre-hiatus, The Hunger Games merchandise allowed her business to grow while earning her loyal customers.  The venture even allowed her to meet fellow fans of the series.

And the best thing ever said to her shop?

“Your shop’s got something WORTH purchasing. Purchasing over and over again.”

Inspiration, Fierceness, Humility — these are three characters that pave way for Chao and SCU to victoriously come back.  It is the inspiration from the overwhelming responses from her previous venture, the fierceness to trudge the waters of the online business arena, and the sense of availability that only down-to-earth and friendly shop owners are able to do are SCU’s driving force.  These are also the values that Chao R. admires in Cato Hadley (fierceness), Finnick Odair (Inspiration, in reference to his love towards Annie Cresta), and Katniss Everdeen (humility), three tributes that for Chao R., shown what a real victor is made of.

CATCHING THE FIRE

Despite earning a minimal profit, SCU is unstoppable in giving away items.  Not that the premiere of Catching Fire is just a few days away.

Part of her merchandise is the most coveted item of all Hunger Game merchandise — the Mockingjay pin.  But while it may be considered a luxury for its rarity and price, SCU gives it in almost a bargain price!  And take note, they are authentic NECA Mockingjay pins, the ones that are certified replicas of pin  used in the games and are being sold in various ToysRUs stores in the US.

It is in offering fandom luxuries that Chao R would like to represent District 1, should she be given the chance to be a tribute.  But unlike in the games, she is the budget-friendly luxury.

In the business world, everyday is like a day in the arena.  Some are crushed by the ones that have prepared for the games while others strive to remain in the competition.  It is a competitive battlefield with the familiar adversaries but with varied opportunities and consequences.  But what is the price?  Profit.  But more than that, what every business strive for, is longevity — the staying power in the battlefield despite adverse circumstances.

For SCU to comeback is a risk. For it comeback successful proves that its loyal followers have remained hopeful for its return.  Thus, in a way, Chao R. became her own victor.  And while she is now up and in fighting form, her ability to remain will now be tested.  Will the odds be in SCU’s favour?  No one knows.

But one thing is for sure, the affordability that she ties with luxury will be her weapon.

That’s not just hot!

That’s fabulous!

Wearing Your Pride

Fandom — six-letter portmanteau on the words fan and kingdom — means a strong and massive fan base.  When a certain artist or work of art, like a book or film for instance, is called to have a fandom, it connotes that it has a cult following and that its popularity and influence could never be underestimated.

Members of a fandom are known to be fangirls and fanboys.  Although they are both fangirls and fanboys are just like any ordinary fan who drools at the sight of their idol, they differ from the conventional fans because they have a strong loyalty, almost to the point of tipping into obsession, towards their idols despite their young age.  For celebrity fandoms, what is more astonishing is that these fanboys and fangirls could be so devoted to their idols, they defend them from online bashers who are known as antis, in such a feisty, almost aggressive manner, like they have known them since time immemorial, when in fact, reality check says that they had rare to non-existent encounters with these stars.

The existence of these fandoms and their hundred- to million-strong fan base became the inspiration for one self-proclaimed fangirl to come up with a shop that highlights the what could be likened to as a national pride for certain fandoms.

Fandomia, a name that sounds like some mythical fandom from a parallel dimension, is an online shop selling printed shirts that highlights your devotion (or obsession) to a certain book series and movie.   It is the brainchild of Danna Mae Catan, a certified fangirl at heart, although going into business was more likely of a serendipitous opportunity rather than a planned undertaking.

Who ever is in love with the Mortal Instruments would
want one of this shirt.
Sample design from Fandomia.

It all began during on day worldwide premiere of the second installment of the Percy Jackson movie, Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters.  As a follower of the movie, Danna would have wanted to wear a Camp Half-Blood shirt on that day, but cannot do so due to being short in finances.  So she asked her mom’s friend to make her a replica of the shirt and when one fangirl friend saw the shirt, she just wanted one as well.  And so as they say, the rest was history.

Fandomia became an enterprise where Danna can apply her skills as a painter.  Meanwhile, since she operates solo, her friends have been there to chip in their skills in editing designs and painting the shirts.

IT ALL BEGINS WITH A SPARK

“I’m a big fangirl of [The Hunger Games} and it has a good fanbase [where} I could sell my shirts,” says Danna after being asked as to why she embarked in selling Hunger Games shirts.  And since the fanbase is just immense, it helped her business be recognized in more fan circles.

And the best thing that was said to her by a customer?

“All I need is a bow.”

This is how a career tribute would taunt his "weaker" opponents.
Sample design from Fandomia.

CATCHING THE FIRE

“I’m team Peeta but I’ve always wondered what happened to Gale” says Danna. “Actually I cried when I noticed that Gale [had] no happy ending. I mean, after loving Katniss and all his sacrifices and hardwork, he deserves somebody to take care of him…like ME.”

If you are both brave and hot, then you should sport this one.
Sample design from Fandomia.

But Fandomia is not limited to Hunger Games and Percy Jackson.  As of these writing,  Fandomia is done making faction shirts which are based on the hit series, Divergent and is currently making designs based on another hit novel, The Fault In Our Stars.  However, the store promises making more Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Beautiful Creatures, and The Mortal Instruments Shirts.

As Hunger Games fans and all its so-called subsidiaries will flock the cinemas this November 21, it won’t be a surprise that one of you might bump into somebody wearing a Fandomia shirt that encapsulates all their love for the series in one shirt design.  And that is the winning formula of Fandomia — being able to understand the young dote hearts of fangirls and fanboys and all their fragile yet extraordinary adoration towards the series they adore.

It is in being relatable that makes Fandomia worthy of the subtle yet inspiring attention they are getting.

Now that’s fabulous!

A Self-Expression Company

Statement and graphic shirts have its way of reflecting a certain character in us. It brings out a certain spunk, a certain quirkiness, and a certain spice that people may know or may not about us. For this reason, a “self-expression company” was born in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

Print Proxy is a T-shirt company that offers t-shirts that with designs based on popular culture.

“We love t shirts, design and pop culture. We’re intrigued by how many different kinds of people there are and want to reach them all,” Jonathan Burgess, the owner of Print Proxy said.

“We came up with the idea by thinking through what we could offer as a form of self expression. We don’t think of ourselves as a t shirt company. We’re a self expression company.” And true enough, the wide selection of shirts from Print Proxy caters to all sort of people who wish to express themselves through fashion. The products allow one to show the world his personality one shirt at a time while still being in since most of the designs are based on what’s in. For instance, come Thanksgiving Day, Print Proxy released shirt designs related to the event.

Twerking and Thanksgiving.  A thanksgiving shirt
which plays on the work twerk and turkey.

Print Proxy is a small collective of young creatives, consisting of three designers who constantly collaborate and have fun at the same time. The creative usually begins with a meeting where they talk about what is trending.

“Some of us have been in the industry awhile and some of us are new to it,” Jon says about them. Asked as to how they learned the art of t-shirt designing and printing, he said “I wouldn’t say it’s what we learned. It’s what we’re currently learning. I’d say we’re mostly learning about people and how they interact.”

For the cute and lazy.  The varying T-shirt designs that
Print Proxy offers give people from all walks of life
a chance to express a piece of themselves through
what they are wearing.

The best thing about Print Proxy, aside from the fact that the people behind the business are happy doing what they do, is that they offer fresh and great concepts everyday and sell new designs in a regular basis. In a crowded industry, producing great content that would somehow become a classic, instead of creating something that would be an overnight success to rake in money easily, is what differentiates them from others. Plus, they have a certain style that could be appreciated by men, women, and people in between.

No Longer Closeted.  In commemoration of a so-called
National Coming Out Day, Print Proxy came up
with a t-shirt design of a rainbow coming out of the closet.

Aside from style, Jon and his team consider comfort, too. Hence, they make sure that the shirts do not just scream “This is Me!” but also comfortable to wear as well. The fact that the company is a small one gives them an upper hand in the industry since it allows themselves to be available to their customers.

“We [also] assure customers are getting the best by being transparent and authentic,” Jon says.

IT ALL BEGINS WITH A SPARK

Given that Print Proxy sells “pop culture merchandises” that are based on “feeling, pun or parody to brand ourselves”, it is not a shocker as to why Print Proxy caught the fire. Among the shirts that they offer is one that says “I Workout Just In Case I Get Reaped into the Hunger Games” and another that says “I Survived the Reaping.”

Feeling Like A Career.  Never let the Capitol see you wearing
this cool shirt.  Remember.  Training for the games is not allowed...
so they say.

Going back into the Hunger Games universe, Katniss did say that it is illegal to train for the games, something which is done by Career tributes who volunteer for the Games in case they are not reaped. This is the case in Districts 1, 2, and 4 which produces many Career tributes for the games. This is a whole lot of contrast in the situation in the other districts where the games are dreaded. In this case, possible tributes — young men and women aged 12 to 18 — do not pray to be reaped for the games.

Survivor.  If your odds are like Gale Hawthorne's who, despite
multiple entries for the games in exchange for tesserae, survived
the reaping each and every time, you can proudly wear this one.

The two Hunger Games-based shirts, hence, gives supporters of Career tributes like Enaboria, Marvel, Glimmer, Cato, and even Finnick (Yeah! He came from District 4) a chance to show their love by wearing the “I Workout Just In Case I Get Reaped into the Hunger Games” shirt. On the other hand, solid fans of Katniss, Peeta, Primrose, and the lovable Rue may opt for the other design.

I wonder when they will make an “If I Don’t Get Reaped, Then I’ll Volunteer As Tribute” shirt…FOR ME. Paging Jon! Kidding!

CATCHING THE FIRE

I am a big fan of the Hunger Games trilogy and I, along with thousands or even millions of people all await for the screening of the second installment of the series, Catching Fire. While for us, it is a moment of ogling over Finnick Odair or screaming over Katniss’s mockingjay gown, for Jon, November 22 will probably be a romantic break for him.

As a shirt designer, Jonathan sure could give the sometimes fabulous, oftentimes flamboyant Hunger Games character Effie Trinket a fashion advice or two. Asked what outfit would he suggest Effie to wear, “I’d like to see her in Lady Gaga’s meat dress.”

Effie's next wardrobe staple.  A more fabulous version of
Lady Gaga's very famous meat dress as worn in the
Monster Ball Tour in Manchester, UK.
(c) wikipedia.com

Jonathan and the rest of the guys behind Print Proxy sure have made self-expression through statement and graphic shirts a fun and easy way to do. After all, he says that their philosophy is nothing but simple. “Be genuine and creative.”

Now that’s fabulous!
